Advantages of brushless motors and disadvantages of brushed motors

Date:2024-02-21 Author:XINDA MOTOR

Advantage of brushless motors:

(1) Brushless, low interference

The brushless motor removes the brush. The most direct change is that there is no spark generated when the brushed motor is running, which greatly reduces the interference of sparks to remote control radio equipment.

(2) Low noise and smooth operation

The brushless motor has no brushes, so the friction during operation is greatly reduced, the operation is smooth, and the noise is much lower. This advantage is a huge support for the stability of the model's operation.

(3) Long life and low maintenance cost

Without the brush, the wear of the brushless motor is mainly on the bearings. From a mechanical point of view, the brushless motor is almost a maintenance-free motor. When necessary, you only need to do some dust removal maintenance. Comparing the top and bottom, you will know the advantages of brushless motors over brushed motors, but everything is not absolute. The performance characteristics of brushed motors such as excellent low-speed torque performance and large torque are irreplaceable by brushless motors. However, As far as the ease of use of brushless motors is concerned, with the cost reduction trend of brushless controllers and the development and market competition of brushless technology at home and abroad, brushless power systems are in the stage of rapid development and popularization, which has also greatly promoted the development of model movements.

Shortcoming of brushed motors:

(1) Large friction and large losses

Old friends all encountered this problem when playing with brushed motors in the past. After using the motor for a period of time, you need to open the motor to clean the carbon brushes of the motor. This is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and the maintenance intensity is no less than a house cleaning.

(2) High heat generation and short lifespan

Due to the structure of brushed motors, the contact resistance between the brushes and the commutator is very large, causing the overall resistance of the motor to be large and easy to heat up. The permanent magnets are heat-sensitive components. If the temperature is too high, the magnets will demagnetize. , causing the motor performance to decrease and affecting the life of the brushed motor.

(3) Low efficiency and small output power

The heating problem of brushed motors mentioned above is largely due to the fact that the current does work on the internal resistance of the motor, so the electrical energy is converted into heat energy to a large extent. Therefore, the output power of brushed motors is not large and the efficiency is not high.
